Clearing the Air
Archbishop David Moxon summed up the Clearing the Air forum on climate change saying that the line-up of speakers had been ‘truly world class’ and that the forum had made a ‘unique contribution’ to the debate. NZ Christian Network National Director Glyn Carpenter commended his co-organisers Dr Jonathan Leaver, Dr Richard Storey, and Dr Rob Bell, and added that he was very pleased with the positive feedback from both delegates and speakers. ‘God is truly honoured when science and faith are brought together in such a positive way and when speakers with very different views can come together in dialogue.’
Click here for abstracts from the forum. A more detailed report will be on the NZ Christian Network website by the end of July.
Scepticism, denial and climate change was the theme of a major paper, The Evidence of Denial: The Case of Climate Change, presented by Victoria University Professor Jonathan Boston at the Clearing the Air forum. In it, he examined why many people – of varying ideological, philosophical and theological beliefs – seriously doubt, or utterly reject, the views of the ‘mainstream’ scientific community on the causes and consequences of climate change. In his article, Ten Ways the Internet Is Changing Evangelism and Missions, John Edmiston writes there are currently 1.7 billion active Internet users; another three billion are expected to be added in the next five years. Catch up at New Zealand Christian Network (visionnetwork) AGM
Over the past 12 months, NZ Christian Network has been involved in a number of key issues. Our Annual General Meeting will be an important opportunity to catch up on what has been happening behind the scenes, as well as to catch up with friends and develop networks across the church in New Zealand.
This year, in addition to the usual efficient business meeting, great food and fellowship, there will be two special items.
First, we are delighted to have Dr Mark Strom, retiring Principal of Laidlaw College, as our after-dinner speaker. Mark finishes his term as principal in September, so this will be a great opportunity to hear some of his reflections on the New Zealand church after five years in the role, and also to farewell and thank him for the contribution he has made since he arrived in New Zealand.
Secondly, we will be introducing some of the delegates who will be attending The Third Lausanne Congress on World Evangelization in October.

Prison Fellowship New Zealand Conference 2010
If we carry on building more prisons, having people serve longer sentences, see more families get affected both as victims of crime and of the overall justice system, the well-being of our country suffers, and we all lose out.
This is a complex area, and we need to collaborate together to help build a justice system we can be proud of as New Zealanders.
At this conference/hui we will aspire to leave behind our prejudices and fears and korero together to find solutions to some of our intractable problems; then we will present these to our Government and continue on to see how we can change direction and together break down the barriers to getting prison numbers down.

   Just Published!
DayStar Books has just released George Bryant's 14th book, Trial to Triumph : Inspiring Stories of Overcomers.
The book examines the undaunted human spirit in the lives of Kiwis who have overcome great personal traumas and moved on to help others. Some of the stories are of well-known New Zealanders, but most are of ordinary people who have worked out how to cope with life under extraordinary circumstances. He crystallises eight key skills, common to all the stories, which will help people deal with life's struggles.
Newspaper columnist, Garth George, says it is ‘uplifting and tremendously encouraging'. The Right Revd Dr Graham Redding, Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand, says it is ‘a great treasure which will encourage and inspire many people'. Rob Harley tells us to read it ‘with humility and hope'.

   LeaDev-Langham opportunity
LeaDev-Langham (Leadership Development International and Langham Partnership) has the opportunity to purchase our own office suite near the top of Queen St, Auckland – at a very low price; about 52 per cent of the current QV. This would offer us the opportunity to build equity, give us some income and give us space to grow. To make this opportunity a reality we need to find a tenant to lease some of the space. We would be happy to have any compatible Christian organisation, or professional/commercial business as our tenants and close neighbours. If you, or someone you know, would like to pursue this possibility, please contact Tony Plews, (09) 376 5190, email tony.plews@ldl.org.nz

'Peace on Earth': Anabaptism and Ecological Action
      in Aotearoa
A Colloquium co-sponsored by A Rocha Aotearoa/NZ (ARANZ), the Anabaptist Association of Australia and NZ (AAANZ), and Urban Vision.
At the beginning of the 21st century we live in a world facing catastrophic environmental degradation and embroiled in a seemingly endless, unwinnable ‘war on terror'. How, in such a context, does the Church live as witnesses to the gospel, the good news of peace? Increasingly, it is acknowledged that tackling the current environmental crisis is inextricably connected to broader attempts to bring about a more peaceful world.
Saturday 29 May 2010, 9 am to 5 pm. Venue: Ngatiawa (Urban Vision Community), Reikorangi Valley, Waikanae, 1 hour from Wellington.

The event will be held on Thursday 22 April, 7.30–9 pm, at Laidlaw College, 80 Central Park Drive/221 Lincoln Road, Henderson, Auckland. Enquiries to Mark, phone +64 9 837 9770, mobile 027 269 8357, email MKeown@laidlaw.ac.nz

Just Worship: curating worship that sustains mission, mercy and justice.
Just Worship is a Queen's Birthday weekend conversation among people interested in exploring the new growing edges of designing corporate Christian worship services and sacred spaces. The gathering is intended to shift participants' understanding of corporate worship from being primarily a static and front-led event that happens only in church, to being an art form that is interactive and participatory and can be set in any context.
To expose participants to new possibilities and get the conversations started, a number of worship curators from New Zealand and Australia will share their extensive experience of designing worship spaces and events in prisons, car parks, schools, conference centres and public spaces as well as church buildings. Stations and art installation based worship events – i.e., the non-singing, non-musical parts of worship – will be the focus. More information is available at www.worldvision.org.nz/churchevents or from Mark Pierson, justworship@worldvision.org.nz

               Dear Pastor

As Kiwis, we love coffee and we love tea. As Christians, we love having a cuppa at church. Before church, during church, after church, in our small groups, at our catch-ups… you get my point, we love it. For most of us, we think nothing of the cost; our caffeine fix is firmly entrenched in our daily life, our daily ritual. Now ask yourself, how much does a cup of coffee really cost?
In the last decade, international trade regulations have driven coffee prices to a 30-year low and to the point that only three cents from a $3.50 cup of coffee actually reaches the farmers who grow the beans. It’s Ecclesiastes 31 for the modern era: “The poor forever toils, barely making a living, and then, leaving off, is poorer than ever.”

But it doesn’t have to be that way.

How can we help you?

New Zealand Christian Network (visionnetwork), World Vision and the Fairtrade Association have teamed up to do something about poverty and the oppression of the poor alongside you. Fairtrade ensures better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability, and fair terms of trade for farmers and workers in the developing world. Fairtrade offers consumers a powerful way to execute justice and help reduce poverty through their everyday shopping. Fairtrade is good news for the poor and good stewardship of church funds.

Fair Trade Fortnight: May 2—16
For Fairtrade Fortnight this year, it would be great to have all NZ churches on board, swapping for Fairtrade; your usual tea for Fairtrade tea, your usual chocolate for Fairtrade chocolate, and your usual coffee for a Fairtrade coffee. Each and every swap will be a vote of support by Christians of NZ for poor farmers in the developing world to get a fairer deal.

As Paul said, “here's what I want you to do, God helping you: Take your everyday, ordinary life—your sleeping, eating, drinking coffee, supermarket shopping, going-to-work and walking-around life—and place it before God as an offering. Embracing what God does for you is the best thing you can do for him. Don't become so well-adjusted to your morning caffeine fix that you buy it each day without even thinking. Instead, fix your attention on God. You'll be changed from the inside out.” (Romans 12:1)

This is a very real and simple change we, as Christians, can make to further God’s call to help eliminate poverty and injustice in the world.

FREE coffee to the first 100 churches!

To help you become a Fairtrade church, we are offering FREE coffee to the first 100 churches who email World Vision. We will also supply you with an Action Pack containing:

     a bulletin insert about Fairtrade
     a procurement guide
a short DVD for your notices
     home group studies
     posters
sermon talking points about justice for the poor

All you need to do is email advocacy@worldvision.org.nz by April 21 and specify which coffee you want:

500g Instant coffee by Scarborough Fair
1kg plunger grind by Café Prima
1kg roasted beans by Celcius Coffee

So, be in quick to receive your free Fairtrade coffee and Action Pack. If you are not among the first 100 churches to email World Vision but still want to participate in Fairtrade Fortnight, you may purchase your action pack and coffee at $35 from World Vision at the above email address.

Become a Fairtrade church and be part of a globally aware community united in the fight against extreme poverty.

  Kingdom economics
More than 25 leaders from churches and Christian organisations in New Zealand met over two days in Wellington during February to discuss the current economic crisis and the churches' responses to it.
The conversation, entitled Kingdom Economics, explored how the Bible challenges Christians to think about economic issues. While our culture places an emphasis on consuming, biblical teaching encourages sharing: how can we practise that more as Christians and churches? Read more…
   Interfaith movement on sandy soil?
The interfaith movement is based on a flawed foundation which will ultimately limit the good it might do, says New Zealand Christian Network, visionnetwork, National Director Glyn Carpenter. Read more…

Global Day of Prayer into last year
2010 is the last year of the decade for this programme, which started in Cape Town and now includes over 200 nations around the world. Following the death of the New Zealand co-ordinator John Fulford, Wellington pastor Mike Knott has taken over co-ordination of this year's national events. Mike writes: “What happens when half a billion people from every nation on earth unite for a day in prayer? We most certainly create an environment for a whole new dimension of expectation and faith." Read more…
   Changing punitive attitudes
The enormous task of changing the punitive attitude which is widespread in society, government and even in some parts of the Church was discussed at the Rethinking Crime and Punishment board meeting on 12 February, as policy and legislation are moving in a more punitive direction. When open-minded people are exposed to good information, and especially when they have first-hand contact with offenders, they realise these policies are not just and do not work. NZ Christian Network, visionnetwork, is actively helping RCAP and Prison Fellowship to communicate their message.
   Resolve (Christian conflict resolution)
It is inevitable that Christians will have different views on issues, but disputes which break out into the public arena (through court or media) are a poor witness to a watching world, not to mention expensive. God's Word has much to say about this issue, and Resolve does an excellent job teaching this through its courses, training mediators, and mediating when needed. Read more…

 Destiny Church
Recent media scrutiny of Destiny Church and its leader Bishop Brian Tamaki has focused mainly on money. There is a lot more to Church and the message of Jesus Christ than money, and there is more to Destiny Church than just money, so the money issue needs to be kept in balance, said New Zealand Christian Network National Director Glyn Carpenter in a discussion paper sent to media. Blessings at Easter
The team at New Zealand Christian Network, visionnetwork, pray a blessing for you and your church this Easter, and if you have organised any sort of special community event, we pray a special blessing on that.

New Zealand Christian Network key forums
New Zealand Christian Network, visionnetwork, is hosting key forums on church health, religion in the workplace, climate change, and participating in the 200-year commemoration planning of the Gospel in New Zealand, during 2010. Read more…
2014 Marsden bicentenary Two hundred years of the Gospel in New Zealand will be commemorated in 2014. Marsden Cross Trust chairman Richard Randerson convened a meeting mid-2009 to bring together some of the groups who have an interest in this significant event. The main focus of this group will be the organisation of events on and around 25 December 2014, which marks the 200th anniversary of the Gospel being preached in New Zealand by the Reverend Samuel Marsden on 25 December 1814. Read more…
   Street Chaplaincy
Love Your Neighbour is interested in bringing to New Zealand a potential ministry opportunity already working overseas known as Street Chaplaincy. As with school, hospital, and prison chaplains, the idea is to have trained people who can be identified as street or community chaplains. NZ Christian Network, visionnetwork, is helping LYN to identify other groups who can assist in getting this project off the ground.

 Lausanne update
Fifteen New Zealanders will join approximately 4000 other evangelical leaders from around the world for the 3rd Lausanne Congress on World Evangelisation, to be held in Cape Town, South Africa, in October this year. This is only the third such event since the first Lausanne Congress in 1973. NZ Christian Network National Director Glyn Carpenter will be one of the New Zealand leaders attending.
    Churches Education Commission
A Memorandum of Understanding was signed on 6 January 2010 by CEC chairman Paul Young and Glyn Carpenter on behalf of New Zealand Christian Network, visionnetwork. This followed our collaboration over the Religion in Schools discussion, and calls for each organisation to keep the other informed of key activities, and to support each other in the spread of the Good News.

 DayStar goes electronic
DayStar, founded by Bruce Nicholls and edited by Julie Belding, has been published from its beginning in association with New Zealand Christian Network. Twelve months ago the DayStar trustees made the decision to have the business side of the magazine run by Media Inc in Australia, with editorial control retained in New Zealand. The magazine shifted immediately to bi-monthly publication and in the last month Media Inc have announced that they have decided to move to electronic distribution to reduce costs.

 Sports chaplaincy
Sports Chaplaincy NZ is one of the most practical and exciting initiatives occurring across the NZ sports ministry scene, and there are some training opportunities coming up in March that you (or someone you know) should consider participating in. The date options and format provide some flexibility for participants to have either a ‘first look' at chaplaincy; complete some units with the option to complete others in future; or to ‘go for gold' and do all the units available this time round. Sports chaplaincy is not just about the elite level sports person – the vision is also for chaplains in a club or at a sports venue near you. Sport is an opportunity for the Church not the competition. For further information, email team@nz.sportschaplaincy.com

Press release - 15 January 2010

visionnetwork urges Kiwis to support Haiti visionnetwork, New Zealand Christian Network, is urging Kiwis to respond generously to the disaster in Haiti, which is reeling from the largest earthquake to hit the Caribbean in 200 years. The initial estimated number of 50,000 dead is now considered to be very conservative and there are countless injured.

visionnetwork is the New Zealand member of the World Evangelical Alliance, which is calling on Christians globally to pray for survivors and to generously support WEA members engaged in the massive relief and rescue effort. National Director Glyn Carpenter said Kiwis are known for their willingness to respond to situations like this, which sadly in recent years have all too frequently hit nations least able to cope. Many Christian NGOs have been working hard in recent years to assist development in Haiti, the poorest nation in the Western hemisphere. Bishop Gerald A. Seale, General Secretary of the Evangelical Association of the Caribbean, said the earthquake has had a devastating impact on that progress. “The social and material gains made in the past two to three years have been totally wiped out by this earthquake,” he said. “As Christian NGOs gear up for a major response in the next few days we need to give sacrificially and pray – pray for the injured and for those who have lost loved ones in this tragedy. Pray for all in Haiti dealing with shock and loss. Pray for the responders as they work in trying circumstances to help those most in need. Pray for the Government of Haiti as they seek to respond in conditions that are unprecedented for them. Pray for the pastors and leaders as they minister in these extreme conditions.” WEA member TEAR Fund is among the many aid agencies responding to the crisis. It said many people remained trapped under the rubble, while the widespread damage to infrastructure was hampering efforts to bring aid to survivors. International Director of the WEA, Dr Geoff Tunnicliffe, also called on the WEA family worldwide to support the people of Haiti. “Please pray for the Christians and local churches as they will be on the forefront of responding to the spiritual, emotional and physical needs of hundreds of thousands of people. We would also ask that you would give generously and support the WEA members who are actively involved in responding to the crisis,” he said.
