Mission Interlink which provides the network for cross cultural mission in NZ continues in good heart.
Several new members have joined the network this year, some being start-ups, responding to newly identified needs. Others have a longer history but have seen the value of connecting with others with a similar burden.
Major trends discernible include:
1. the growing concern for the new ethnicities now resident in NZ. As churches look for resources and advice on how to reach their new neighbours, several agencies are offering resources in a variety of languages and the School of Global Mission at BCNZ has hosted seminars.
2. The recognition of Business as a legitimate strategy in its own right for Mission. This gives expression to holism with the Christian gospel being lived 24/7 and transforming communities economically as well as spiritually. Tentmakers who are employed in key roles and entrepreneurs who create new employment situations in viable business ventures are showing true Kiwi ingenuity.
3. “Anywhere to everywhere” is the new catch phrase replacing the “west to the rest” as the emerging world takes leadership in mission. Recent World Evangelical Alliance- Missions Commission Consultation in South Africa gave expression to this reality. The focus of Kiwi involvement needs to change but not the level of it.
4. The growing recognition of holistic efforts needed to tackle poverty. Micah Challenge has emerged as a Christian response to the problem highlighted by a visit of Sir Bob Geldof of our nations poor record of overseas aid. Micah Challenge is encouraging Churches and people to be more proactive in tackling poverty and in holding our Government to its commitment to the Millennium Development Goals. Go to www.micahchallenge.org.nz to be involved in this campaign.
Preparation for registration under the Charities Commission is a current priority among our agencies.
A new Directory to help people “Get Connected in Mission” is being published and the 128 agencies are also listed on our website www.missions.org.nz
