Tuesday Streams

Cross-cultural mission
Leader: David Hall
Facilitator: Christine Harding, National Director, OMF; Stream leader of Missions Interlink NZ.
Contributors: Peter Mihaere, New Zealand Director, World Reach: Strategic alliances; Ray Totorewa, Nga Paehere, YWAM NZ: Maori and other ethnic outreach in NZ; Glyn Carpenter, National Director, NZ Christian Network: City churches and effective urban outreach; Anna Robertson, Kiwi team leader in South-East Asia: Incarnational missions.
Examining some current mission reports and ways that Kiwis are finding effective to spread the Gospel in New Zealand and in unreached places around the world.

City church
Leader: Seth Fawcet
How does the concept of ‘one church of a city meeting in many locations’ fit into the extension of God’s kingdom? This workshop will look at some key stories, challenges, and opportunities arising from unity in the church at a local level.

Healthy church
Leaders: John Daniel, Murray Robertson, Nick Field
Over the last few years a great deal has been heard about church growth, but in churches growth is normally an outgrowth of health. The workshop will look at some of the factors that lead to health and some of the things that happen in churches that lead to unhealthy outcomes. John and Murray will draw on their wide experience of what is happening in church life in New Zealand.

CViC – Churches Volunteering in Communities
Leader: Lindsay Jones
CViC: Churches facing community, intentionally cultivating relationships and creating opportunities for the Gospel.
In partnership with denominations, CViC intends to:
- establish an accredited training programme for community-oriented church volunteers
- facilitiate networking for these leaders
- provide resources and support for those involved in this ministry

Kingdom economics
Leaders: Andrew Bradstock, Martien Kelderman
Part of our vision for ‘the Gospel in the decade ahead’ will be wanting to see our society become more ‘godly’, and that will mean engaging with questions relating to the economy. But what resources, as Christians and churches, do we have for such engagement? This session gets us looking at three groups of Scripture passages and asking whether – and how – they have any relevance to our 21st-century context. The passages are 1. Creation (Genesis 1–3); 2. A nomadic and agricultural community (Exodus 16:13–30), Leviticus 25:1–28, Deuteronomy 15:1–11; 3. The parables (Matthew 20:1–16; 25:14–30).

Biblical worldview
Leader: Rod Thompson
Is there such a thing as a biblical worldview? If so, what is it? Worldview language has been in vogue among Christian authors and leaders since James Orr (1844-1913) and Abraham Kuyper (1837-1920). More recently, New Zealanders such as Harold Turner have given leadership to worldview thought and writing. In this workshop we will explore the relationship between worldviews, the scriptures and the practices of diverse cultures – and we will chart a way forward for those seeking to impact cultures with the gospel in the next decade and beyond.

Transformative Bible engagement
Leader: Rasik Ranchord
Contributor: Steven Opie
Presenting New Zealand research by the Bible Society on Bible engagement, the results of the recent Bible engagement consultation in Malaysia, and looking at the practical outworking in church life.

International speakers for congress

Two significant international speakers have been confirmed for the 6th New Zealand Christian Leaders'  Congress, to be held at Waikanae in February 2011.

Dr Geoff Tunnicliffe, International Director of the World Evangelical Alliance, and Jeff Fountain, founder of the Shuman Centre for European Studies, will give insights into the global situation.

World Evangelical Alliance

The World Evangelical Alliance has been directed since 2005 by Geoff Tunnicliffe, a Canadian who also serves as the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada's director of global initiatives. Based in Vancouver, Geoff spends a considerable amount of time travelling, mentoring leaders of Evangelical Alliances, speaking at global conferences, conducting media interviews, meeting with government and faith leaders and interacting with institutions such as the United Nations, G-8 and the World Bank. Building evangelical identity, encouraging collaboration and unity, and building a strong voice for the marginalised, the poor and the persecuted are his priorities.

Shuman Centre for European Studies

Jeff Fountain set up the Schuman Centre for European Studies after serving as director for YWAM Europe for 20 years. Jeff studied history at Auckland University but has lived in Holland since 1975 where he married his Dutch wife, Romkje. They oversee a multi-ministry YWAM centre in Heerde, the Netherlands, and have three adult sons, two daughters-in-law, one granddaughter and a foster daughter. Jeff has written several books including Living as People of Hope and Deeply Rooted. Jeff also chairs the Hope for Europe Round Table and edits the movement's magazine, HOPE Magazine. The Schuman Centre, affiliated with the University of the Nations, aims to promote biblical perspectives on Europe's past, present and future through courses and events, study units and think tanks, and projects and resources.

The Congress theme, 2020 Vision – The Gospel in the Decade Ahead, will be explored and developed in the sessions under such titles as Gospel Vision for the Decade Ahead; 2014 – 200 Years of the Gospel in New Zealand; Whole Church – Whole Gospel; and The Gospel, State, and Other Faiths.

Have your say

Last year we conducted a survey about what issues Christian leaders thought NZ Christian Network (visionnetwork) should be involved with. The results of that survey have guided our work this year. Now we would appreciate your feedback to help us sharpen our focus.

In this survey we are simply asking ‘What do you think are the two most important social issues which the Church should be working on together to bring about change for the good?'

In particular, we would like to focus on foundational issues, which if changed would cause a flow-on improvement in other areas also.

The survey will take less than 10 minutes. If you have time to share your thoughts it will be greatly appreciated.

Your answers will be treated as confidential, but it would be useful if you would enter your name so we can seek further clarification if necessary.
